Institutional mechanism of engagement that exists between India and Australia are:
- India-Australia CECA negotiations
- India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission
Based on the recommendations of the Joint Study Group (JSG) in 2010 and subsequent approval of the Trade and Economic Relations Committee (TERC) headed by the then Prime Minister of India on 29.4.2011, India is negotiating with Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) covering trade in goods, services, investment and related issues. Nine rounds of negotiations have been held so far. The 1st round was held in July, 2011 and 9th Round was held during 21-23 September, 2015 in New Delhi.
Currently both sides are discussing re-engagement on CECA in mutually agreed way
A mechanism of Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) between India and Australia has been in place since 1989. The Commission is co-chaired by the Indian Minister of Commerce and Australian Minister of Trade. The mandate of JMC, inter-alia, includes consideration of measures to strengthen relations between the two countries in all areas, particularly in the fields of commercial, economic, scientific and technological cooperation; raise issues of major importance to the relationship and discuss approaches to significant issues of common concern; indicate priority areas for further cooperation; examine the working of the various bilateral agreements in force between the two countries and of arrangement embodies in memoranda of understanding etc. The 16th India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) Meeting was held in New Delhi, India on 24th February, 2020. The Session was co-chaired by Hon’ble CIM and Hon. Senator Simon Birmingham, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Govt. of Australia.

Based on the recommendations of the Joint Study Group (JSG) and subsequent approval of Trade and Economic Relations Committee (TERC) headed by the then Prime Minister of India on 21.1.2010, India is negotiating with New Zealand Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) covering trade in goods, services, investment and related issues. India and New Zealand met for the 10th round of bilateral CECA (Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement) negotiations in New Delhi on 17-18 February, 2015. There has been no engagement after the 10th Round.
